Welcome to Utah’s Place!
Here at Utah’s Place we have a variety of volunteer opportunities.
Monitor Assistants: A volunteer monitor assists the guests of Utah’s Place in the afternoons and evenings. When the doors of Utah’s Place reopen every day at 2:00 PM, it is extremely helpful to have a volunteer monitor work upstairs, so the guests can have access to the showers, laundry, and dormitory. The job is helping the guests move through the laundry and shower schedule to make sure it runs smoothly. There are no specific skills for this job, it is largely being present and monitoring their activities upstairs in the shelter, answering questions, handing out supplies, etc. We will provide a tour and set you up with a current volunteer to shadow, to help you learn the routine. This takes place directly at the shelter, Utah’s Place, 1262 Sutton Way, Grass Valley. This position has two shifts, from 2-4 and 4-8 PM, 7 days per week. The later shift needs two people so it is a great opportunity for couples or friends to work together. Most of our current volunteers either work every other week, on a repeating schedule, or once a week on their chosen day of the week.
Fundraising and outreach: Volunteer at one of our fundraising events. We need help with setup and cleanup, pickups and deliveries, keeping programs flowing during the event and many other special needs, specific to each event. Most of these positions don’t require special skills, but if you have one that fits well with the event, please let us know! These events occur 3-4 times a year, and all need volunteers, choose which appeal to you and work into your schedule. A partial list of events can be found at: https://hhshelter.org/events-fundraisers/
Dinner Preparation: Dinner team volunteers. Grab your friends and adopt one night per month (or more!) to prepare dinner for our guests at Utah’s Place. Teams are made up of at least six people who donate, prepare and serve dinner for 60 guests. Some teams break up their members into preparers and servers, if the team is large enough. Training is a prerequisite for this volunteer position for one or two people on the team. It is an online Food Safety Course that can be taken at home or at Utah’s Place. We need dinner prepared every night, so come join the fun in the kitchen! This generally takes three to four hours per dinner, beginning around 3 PM, serving dinner at 6:00, and finishing up at 6:30. Teenagers are encouraged to volunteer with their parents. Anyone interested may come in and observe. For some fun facts about this program, click here.
Enrichment: Be a part of our enrichment program by teaching and sharing your skills and passions to our guests. Enrichment happens every afternoon, at the shelter, sometime between 2 PM and 6 PM. This can be a one-time event or an ongoing class you’d like to continue teaching and each session can be as short or long as desired. This is a fabulous opportunity to get to know the homeless that live among you and enrich their lives. This area is wide open, so contact us with your ideas and we’ll see how we can make them work.
Drivers: If you can drive and would like to spend time with the guests of Utah’s Place, then this is a perfect fit for you. We often need volunteers to drive guests to appointments of various sorts. This position is on an “as needed” basis, and the volunteer would be called a day or more ahead of time to schedule the ride. This takes a couple hours if the driver is to wait for the guest and give them a return ride, or it can be arranged to have another volunteer give the return ride.
