As reported on KVMR, on 8/21/18

We have a large County, and we often get stuck in the thinking that because we have an impacted homeless situation in Grass Valley and Nevada City, that we tend to forget that we also have other communities.  North San Juan and Truckee are communities that are often neglected but they are also part of Nevada County.  In an effort to improve this situation we have been making more connections with other outreach individuals and organizations that are helping the homeless population in the Eastern side of Nevada County.  Because we are the only homeless Shelter in Nevada County, it has been really good to make more ties with other organizations from Truckee, especially because they experience harsher winters up there.  In the course of three months, we had three clients that have been referred to Hospitality House from organizations such as, Project MANA (which mission is to reduce the incidence of hunger in that area) and Family Resource Center of Truckee.

In an effort to reduce fire danger, guests of Hospitality House will spend the morning cleaning up homeless encampments on Thursday, October 18, 2018. Volunteers, the Grass Valley Police Department and Hospitality House staff will join in to supply tools, training and assistance.

Volunteers with pickup trucks or trailers are needed to transport trash to the dumpster, to move bags to the pickup area and to bag up items. Meet at 9 a.m. at Utah’s Place, 1262 Sutton Way, Grass Valley. Gloves, trash bags, shovels and pickers will be provided. The cleanup event will end at 1 p.m. after lunch, prepared for all participants by the Hospitality House culinary students.  Contact Frank Gates at 615-0805 or email Frank@hhshelter.org to sign up.

Thank you to volunteer dinner groups who cooked up a storm of fresh garden produce this week for the shelter guests: Universal Unitarians, Unity in the Gold Country, Barbara A’s Team, Telestream, The Home Team, Abundant Life, Resistance Catering and The Choppers.

We want to thank all of you who dropped off items last week. Now down to the nitty gritty needs of the shelter for THIS week . . .
