As reported on KVMR, on 10/26/18
Hospitality House Guests took the lead in cleaning some Grass Valley homeless camps and adjacent rural areas last Thursday. Working with the Grass Valley Police Department and Waste Management, 16 volunteers cleaned 5 locations using 4 trucks to fill a 30-yard dumpster. I just love how everyone does their part in this community to make Nevada County a great place to live!
Now, there’s special story that I want to share with you all today…It’s an incredible success story of a gentleman that I will call… “Joe”. Joe is 79 years old and is presenting with the early stages of dementia. He has been sheltering with Hospitality House for several months.
Joe has been having a challenging time finding a stable home due to his memory loss issues.
Through meetings with his Doctors and a Neurologist, Joe was able to medically get diagnosed with “early dementia”, which allows him to prepare for his long-term care needs. He is not yet, at the level of needing a Skilled Nursing Facility for full dementia care. The wonderful news is that, last Friday we were able to get him into an intermediate housing placement; in a setting with five other residents. His new home is a wonderful, quiet, and a low stress environment, which will help him to adjust back into some daily routines. This will give him a good sense of safety and increased independent living. His new housemates have already proven to be very, very helpful with Joe. This house is in a great location in town, which allows Joe to walk to where he needs to go, ….so he doesn’t really need a car. We will of course, continue to offer him wrap-around case management services for as long as he may need.
A big thank you to the all the volunteer dinner groups who made dinner for 80 hungry folks every night this past week: Trinity Episcopal Church, St. Mary’s School, Unitarian Universalist Community of the Mountains, Twin Cities, Trinity Episcopal Church, Barbara’s team, The Choppers, and… the Abundant Life Church.
