As reported on KVMR, on 2/15/19
I am Frank, Volunteer Manager with Hospitality House, which is the only emergency homeless shelter in Nevada County, with 69 beds for homeless men, women and children.
Today I want to share a story with you all, a story about an outstanding and committed volunteer with Hospitality House. Her name is Margaret Little, Margaret’s journey started back in 2004 with the planning of a compassionate shelter along with Utah Phillips’ wife Joanna Robinson and others in Nevada County.
After 15 years of committed volunteer work, Margaret is still with us and serving our homeless neighbors in Nevada County. She has served as a Board Member, and currently volunteers at Bread & Roses twice a week, helps at our fundraising events such as Night of Giving and Empty Bowl, every single year.
Margaret’s trajectory speaks for itself, she is committed to the mission of Hospitality House, to bring homeless people in Nevada County into a circle of community caring that offers shelter, sustenance, medical care, advocacy, opportunity, dignity, and hope as we assist them in transitioning from homelessness to housing. Thank you, Margaret, for being a pioneer of the only emergency shelter in Nevada County, for tirelessly giving back to your community, and for not leaving a homeless neighbor behind. You make this community a better place for all of us, thank you.
If you are inspired by Margaret’s story, and have the calling or desire to improve your community, you can join Hospitality House’s team of volunteers. We have many areas where you can help, while making new friends and give back to your community. If you are interested in volunteering, you can call Frank at 530-615-0805 or email Frank@hhshelter.org.
A big thank you to the all the volunteer dinner groups who made dinner for 69 hungry folks every night this past week: Twin Cities Church, Trinity Church – Episcopal: Historic Faith for Modern People, Betsy Abrams Group, Kitchen Kut-Ups, the Home Team, Repeat Offenders and Unitarian Universalist Community of the Mountains
Empty Bowl is coming up soon! -an annual benefit for our shelter taking place on Saturday, March 23. Enjoy a simple meal of bread and soup with friends as we take a moment to appreciate what a bowl of soup truly means when you are hungry and without a home. You also get to choose your favorite soup and a unique hand-crafted bowl! You can purchase your ticket at Bread & Roses Thrift and More and at BriarPatch Food Co-op or online through hhshelter.org. A big thank you to Northern California Mortgage for helping make this event possible!

In an effort to streamline donations for those in need, we kindly ask that all donations now be dropped off at the backdoor of Bread & Roses, our thrift shop, located at 840 E Main Street, Grass Valley, next door to Sierra Cinemas. Bread & Roses is equipped with a team of wonderful volunteers who sort every donation upon arrival—both for the store and for the shelter, including the shelter’s most urgent needs. When you arrive, simply tell the greeter where you’d like your donation allocated, but remember, a donation to Bread & Roses is also a donation in support of Hospitality House with every sale supporting those in need. If we all stick together, we’ll get what we need. Thank you!
