Hospitality House is the only emergency homeless shelter in Nevada County, with 69 beds for homeless men, women and children.
I’m Frank Gates and I’m the volunteer manager at Hospitality House, working daily with amazing community members who give their time to help those in need. Right now, I’m hoping to make new friends with people in the community who might be able to organize a donation drive for our homeless shelter and thrift store, Bread & Roses. Drives can take place at your business, church or just with friends, but our shelter guests and thrift store need your help year-round. Clothing, small furniture, kitchen gadgets all help us greatly. We can even help with pick up as needed. If anyone listening has an interest in hosting a donation drive to benefit our homeless community, please call me directly at 530-615-0805 or by email at frank@hhshelter.org.
Additionally, be sure to shop at Bread & Roses this Saturday, March 13 to enjoy 30% off your entire purchase. We’re opening our doors early at 10am for all your shopping needs! And grab your Empty Bowl tickets while you’re there too!
It’s hard to believe, but Empty Bowl will be here in just two short weeks and is pacing to sell out. Tickets are on sale at hhshelter.org, at Bread & Roses, and at BriarPatch Food Co-Op. If you’d like to volunteer or donate a handmade bowl for the event, please contact our Empty Bowl team at 530-615-0852. Thank you—KVMR—for your sponsorship and Dignity Health – Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital as well for helping to make our event possible.
We are grateful for every volunteer who helps us and I want to take a moment to thank everyone who helped cook and provide meals last week: Twin Cities Church, Unity in the Gold Country, Seasoned with Love, Choppers, the Home Team, Abundant Life and Wolf Creek Lodge Cohousing Association—thank you all! And to everyone who dropped off needed items last week—thank you as well! Now down to the nitty gritty needs of the shelter for this week…
- Men’s and women’s disposable under-britches, sizes M and L
- Disposable paper under pads
- Q-tips
- Hairbrushes
- Shampoo
- Conditioner
- Rain Gear (the need is dire)
- Warm gloves
- Hand warmers
- Tampons, size super
- Warm blankets
- Lastly, we have a very special request for a guest that has sheltered on and off with us for many years. He is a vet with PTSD (which impacts his ability to stay here since it’s hard for him to be around a lot of noise and in a small space). He has a Suburban with two broken windows, which he currently lives in. With the cold weather, we’d love if he could roll his windows up for added warmth. If anyone listening right now might want to help this veteran in need, please call Fred Skeen on our team at 559-5411. Thank you!
Please drop off urgent items to Utah’s Place, located in Brunswick Basin, past the DMV, at 1262 Sutton Way. For all other donations that may benefit a homeless guest or the shelter in general, please take them to the backdoor of Bread & Roses, our thrift shop, located at 840 E Main Street, directly next door to Sierra Cinemas. Guests at our shelter are given shopping vouchers for the store to buy what they need, so your donation directly helps them. All other items are sold with 100% of the sales supporting the shelter’s operations. Thank you for sticking together so that we all get what we need.
