The Nevada County Grocer Partners with Hospitality House for Another Year.

Grass Valley, Calif. (March 29, 2022) – SPD Markets, a community-oriented grocery with locations in both Nevada City and Grass Valley, is committed to providing quality, locally sourced groceries not only to its patrons, but to Nevada County residents experiencing homelessness. By partnering with Hospitality House, the community’s leading homeless services provider, SPD will continue to provide critical sustenance to local men, women, children, seniors, and veterans in crisis.

SPD’s unwavering support has been a critical component in Hospitality House’s ability to provide to fuel and nourishment. In their 2020-2021 fiscal year, Hospitality House served 618 unique individuals and provided 84,664 meals. By offering Hospitality House ongoing financial support to purchase any foods in their stores, on top of gifting their buying power for the first-time last year, SPD’s partnership went on to help provide 38 percent of the total meals served.

As a long-standing, family-owned business, being a good neighbor is central to SPD’s company ethos. Third-generation owner Ben Painter understands the importance of helping those in need.

“This is where we’ve all grown up, raised our families, and worked for a long time,” Painter shared. “We’re a community business, and, in turn, we believe in supporting organizations who make our community such a wonderful place to live. Hospitality House is helping our neighbors by putting a roof over their heads and hot food in their bellies. It’s a cause we firmly believe deserves our support.”

Homelessness is on the rise in Nevada County, partly because of pandemic-related job loss and the recent sharp increase in housing costs in Nevada County. These factors have magnified the importance of Hospitality House’s work and the services it provides to those most vulnerable. To match the escalated need, SPD remains committed as a strategic partner of the organization and has increased its financial support of Hospitality House in 2022, committing to provide at least 12,500 hot and healthy meals to those experiencing food insecurity. Additionally, SPD will extend its buying power to the organization once again, which has allowed Hospitality House to purchase high-quality groceries in bulk and at cost, providing significant savings and creating a considerable impact for the organization.

“Because of our expanded operations due to COVID-19, today we are providing more than twice as many meals per day as before March 2020,” said Nancy Baglietto, executive director of Hospitality House. “SPD Markets and the Painter family have been instrumental in ensuring our ability to provide three daily meals to members of our community experiencing homelessness not only at Utah’s Place but to those displaced in motels and to those newly housed in our senior housing complex.”

Thanks to the ongoing support of local donors, partners, and organizations like SPD, 147 locals reached housing destinations in the last fiscal year. To help further services to those in need, the community’s support is always welcome and appreciated.
