Speaking of people staying at the shelter, yesterday Hospitality House guests took the lead in cleaning Grass Valley camps and rural areas. Working with the Grass Valley Police Department and Waste Management, 16 volunteers cleaned 5 locations using 4 trucks to fill a 30-yard dumpster. I love how everyone does their part in this community to make Nevada County a great place to live.
One of those people just doing “her part” is Susan. Susan is one of our volunteers at our thrift store, Bread & Roses. After 40 plus years as an R.N., Susan retired and found herself living on a ranch and came to discover that she really missed helping others, caring for others and, quite frankly, that human connection. Susan started out working with guests at Utah’s Place; the shelter, which she loved. As she was telling me her story, her eyes lit up as she explained her surprise at the kindness and gratitude she received from the shelter guests. After some volunteering at Utah’s Place, Susan found herself not wanting to volunteer at night anymore.
And then…she found a home volunteering at Bread & Roses. She loves it, she told me. “The staff and other volunteers there are all so fun and friendly” she says, “and always willing to help.” Susan volunteers a few hours a week at Bread & Roses and is once again experiencing that fulfillment that working with and caring for others can provide. We need help at Bread & Roses Thrift! We also need a group or family to buy vegetable starts and plant the vegetable boxes in front of the shelter—next week, while it is still warm! A big thank you to the volunteer dinner groups who made dinner for 80 every night last week: Alta Sierra Church of Latter Day Saints, Twin Cities, Trinity Episcopal, Barbara’s team, The Choppers, Abundant Life Church and the shelter’s culinary students menu served up by the Nevada City Chamber Board. We also want to thank Chip Arenchild from InterWest Insurance Services and Chapa-De Indian Health who signed up to sponsor Night of Giving coming up on December 22—mark your calendars now!
