Hospitality House is the only emergency homeless shelter in Nevada County, with 69 beds for homeless men, women and children.
Many times, the shelter is full, but we still try to provide as much support as we can. We have a story of a woman that recently wrote to us about her experience at the shelter. This is what she wrote:
I couldn’t believe how easy and fast it was to get help at the shelter. I was not able to get a bed, first come, first served, as I showed up late that day. But I left with a bag full of great food, another bag full of new toiletries and hygiene products, a clean and warm comfy jacket. It was hard to hold back the tears, I feel so grateful. Eva and the staff were so kind and welcoming. They do have a breathalyzer on site, and I was told that they drug screen and do TB test, but that is understandable considering how close quarters it was, and how one person could make everyone else sick or one intoxicated person could really cause trouble for everyone else. They helped me without any issue or hesitation. They also offered me additional resources and information, where I could receive other services, such as getting laundry done and taking a shower, even getting a blanket and a tent if there is no shelter available! This is not a place for freeloaders who just want to get intoxicated at other people’s expense. Instead It’s a place for people who sincerely want to improve their lives but just need some help right now. I feel I have a moral obligation to volunteer here when I’m back on my feet. We need more places like Hospitality House.
The reason this woman wants to volunteer is just one of the many reasons people volunteer at Hospitality House. Some people volunteer to feel connected, and socialization is a big reason for volunteering. Some just want to serve and be part of something bigger than themselves. There are so many more reasons people serve but regardless of the reason, volunteers are vital to Hospitality House. We are truly grateful for each and every one of them.
A big thank you to the volunteer dinner groups who made dinner for 80 every night last week: Alta Sierra Church of Later Day Saints, Twin Cities, Trinity Episcopal, The Veritas Church, Kitchen Kutups, Grass Valley Charter, Abundant Life Church and the shelter’s culinary students.
