I’m Will, the chef at Utah’s Place, Hospitality House’s emergency shelter. I’d like to give a shoutout to the five caretakers who help me in the kitchen on a rotational basis.

Caretakers are shelter guests who volunteer to help with a particular task, such as washing and folding laundry, helping with pet care, groundskeeping, maintaining the donation closet, or working in the kitchen. Making well over 100 meals a day requires lots of prep work and many dishes– I can’t imagine what my job would be like without their help! Kitchen caretakers wash dishes, visit local food banks with me three times a week, organize the pantry, help with meal prep, and even prepare the occasional meal. Now in my second month at Hospitality House, I couldn’t be more grateful for the support they offer and the camaraderie we share.

Thank you to everyone who volunteers in different ways and donates to Hospitality House. It is because of your generosity and compassion that we are able to continuously shelter and care for our homeless locals. For those who’d like to partner with us to change lives, please consider joining our Hearts & Hands Club, where giving as little as $10 per month can add up to a big impact over the year. Also, a big thank you to our partners for providing ongoing food and/or financial support: Interfaith Food Ministry, the Bishop Store (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Nevada City) and Food Bank of Nevada County. To everyone who donated our most needed items last week, thank you as well! We are incredibly grateful to all of you who give your time, energy and compassion to those who need it most.

The shelter’s wish list for the week:

• Towels (any size, always welcome)

• Twin-size bed sheets (urgent need)

• Washcloths
