Meet Will: Guest and Garden Caretaker

Will works in Hospitality House’s garden every day. Caring for the garden and helping it grow has been therapeutic and rewarding for Will as we continue to look for his forever home.

In the following video, Will talks about the garden and also acknowledges the donors who support him.

“It’s been a wonderful blessing for me to be taking care of the garden and being part of Hospitality House,” said Will. “We’d like to thank everyone for your approval and your help in keeping the House going and being such an important part of the community for everyone who lives here.”

Giving Hearts, Lending Hands

Did you know Hospitality House has a Hearts & Hands Club? Hearts & Hands is a group of wonderful people who donate every month to support the efforts of Hospitality House. Club donations are allocated toward the greatest needs each month, including but not limited to shelter, food, clothing, outreach, housing assistance, case management, and job training.

You can become an honored club member by donating as little as $1 per month and change a life in the process.

This month, we have an ambitious goal to welcome 25 new members. Will you join our club?

Under donation frequency, select “monthly” for Hearts & Hands Club.

Volunteer Spotlight: George Dunstan

George began volunteering at Hospitality House in 2005 when it was a nomadic shelter. He vividly remembers when guests and volunteers used to meet at the Welcome Center, and a bus would pick them up and take them to a designated church for the night. George has volunteered every week nonstop for 14 years as a shelter advocate (formally monitor). He helps with guests’ immediate needs, such as providing clothes and toiletries, dedicates time to talk to guests, and has helped with the installing of beds for the Onward Dorm and in many other countless areas.

“I wanted to be part of this community,” explained George. “I like having person to person contact and interacting with people. It makes it more meaningful and having direct contact with people is fulfilling. It’s what I do on Thursdays and I have built friendships with staff and other volunteers. Volunteering for Hospitality House has become part of my life. It keeps me going and I look forward to it every week.”

His dedication to our guests and Hospitality House’s mission to bring homeless people in Nevada County into a circle of community caring that offers shelter, sustenance, and care as we assist them in transitioning from homelessness to housing is such a blessing. Thank you, George!

People volunteer with Hospitality House in a variety of ways, and we’re always looking for new volunteers who can help further our mission and services. Business Appreciation: Planting a Future Together

Hospitality House and Sierra Harvest have partnered to grow their programs together with a goal to increase self-sufficiency and skills for low-income and homeless individuals through nutrition-related endeavors.

“We are joining forces to leverage Sierra Harvest’s passion to enable fresh food access for everyone and Hospitality House’s ability to provide a space and compassion for our homeless community,” explained Aimee Retzler, Co-Director of Sierra Harvest. “Working together we give Hospitality House clients opportunities to gain knowledge, skills, self-worth and access to fresh, local, organic food.”

Guests will have an opportunity to learn farming, gardening, carpentry as well as receive nutritional education. Thank you, Sierra Harvest, for this wonderful opportunity!
