Empire Commons

Providing affordable housing options for Nevada County residents

Empire Commons

Located at 626 S. Auburn Street in Grass Valley, Empire Commons is a housing community acquired in 2026 and operated by Hospitality House. The property sits on 1.37 acres nestled among the trees just minutes from downtown Grass Valley — close to shopping, services, and the broader Nevada County community.

The 11 cottages were built in the late 1930s, during the height of Grass Valley’s hardrock gold mining era. Empire Commons takes its name from the Empire Mine, one of the richest gold mines in California history, located less than two miles away and now a State Historic Park.

The property comprises miners’ cabins ranging from 300 to 1,000 square feet, with a shared laundry room on site. Hospitality House has renovated the cabins to serve veterans, families transitioning out of homelessness, individuals at risk of losing their housing, and local workforce residents.
